Every year, Deutsch Fine Jewelry partners with Heroes for Children for their charity auction and fashion show, Heroes for Handbags. The 2024 event this year was held at the stately clubhouse atop the rolling greens of Lakeside Country Club and was a beautiful whirlwind of charity, humanity, and designer handbags. The handbags were donated by numerous local boutiques—all on immaculate display for hopeful auction-goers. The silent auction was fueled by sparkling prosecco, spicy bloody marys, and strawberry-garnished mimosas. Event co-chairs Rachel Strauss and Sofia Frommer took to the podium to introduce the children and families that have been assisted by the charity. The kids and their families strutted their stuff in new outfits down the runway while their individual stories were shared with the auction-goers. The charity attendees connected with the families through many tears, laughs, and applause.
It’s always a privilege to be part of the tireless efforts of Heroes for Children, a charity that combats the struggles of pediatric cancer. Anyone who has had a loved one who has battled cancer knows that cancer can be expensive – both financially and emotionally. Treatments, medications, and hospital bills can be exorbitant, but there are plenty of expenses that can’t be covered or mitigated by insurance – that’s where Heroes for Children brings their support. Through spearheading five programs that tackle auxiliary issues that cancer patients and their families face, Heroes for Children ensures that those families can focus on the task at hand: treatment. Their Impact Program focuses on monthly bills and living expenses. For families struggling to keep the lights on or food on the table, the Impact Program provides funds for those basic needs. Their Milestone Program provides support for events like birthdays, cancer remission celebrations, and end-of-life celebrations that create joy and provide closure for those who need it. Since early childhood cancer treatment can cause fertility issues later in life, Heroes for Children also has a Fertility Program that retrieves and freezes eggs and sperm before a teenager starts chemotherapy so they can still choose to have a family when they grow up. Their Laptops for Love program provides laptops to children and families so they can connect to school and each other during treatment and if the worst comes to pass, Heroes for Children has a Funeral Assistance program so that parents and guardians have one less stressor while they grieve the loss of their child. These programs have assisted families across Texas for 20 years and have been an incredible support for families in Houston, which houses the largest cancer medical complex in the world.
This heartwarming event provided education, joy, and smiles to all who attended, but more importantly, Heroes for Handbags 2024 raised about $85,000 for kids and families battling childhood cancer. This year, Deutsch donated a beautiful diamond and sapphire necklace in shining white gold for the charity raffle, which was won by the lucky Christine Spencer-Mallozzi. Each raffle ticket was a $50 donation to the Heroes for Children foundation, and with 91 raffle tickets sold, raised over $6,800 alone. The donations and support that are pledged during this event can change the lives and recovery of a child in need. Follow Heroes for Children for more events and ways to support.
