It’s officially 2025 and it’s the perfect time to set intentions for the new year. While everyone is busy sorting out their work schedules and vacation plans around their new gym memberships, don’t forget about the jewelry. We wrote an article last year about how important proper storage is when it comes to fine jewelry upkeep (spoiler alert: it’s really important.) While everyone knows how it feels to have a tangled mess of chains in an unkempt jewelry box or even worse – how it feels to lose a beloved fine jewelry piece. We’ve put together a few tips and tricks to organize that jewelry box so it’s easy to account for all of the diamonds and pearls. It’s even a smart thing to do from a financial perspective. Our in-house appraisal expert recommends that everyone keep tabs on their fine jewelry via proper storage and with a spreadsheet that itemizes all of the prized possessions in one place. It puts an extra measure in place for the worst-case scenario – if something happens to the jewelry, knowing exactly where everything is and having an itemized record will make the insurance dealings a breeze.
Capsule Jewelry Box
Capsule Wardrobes have been all the rage since Mari Kondo popularized the idea in her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up in 2011. The concept is that since most clothing is seasonal, free up the closet by only hanging basics and seasonally-appropriate clothing and relagating the rest to accessible storage to be changed out with the seasons. A capsule jewelry box has a similar concept but with a focus on daily-wear jewelry versus pieces for special occasions. For girls that cycle through a few tried-and-true jewelry looks can organize those pieces in a small jewelry box on her vanity or counter. Dainty rings, huggie hoops, studs, or a monogram necklace would lay neatly in the capsule jewelry box for everyday looks, while the big diamond statement pieces would live in an easily-accessible but out-of-the-way location for special occasions. Many people who opt for this organizational system like to keep the bulk of their jewelry in a safe, while having only their capsule jewelry box out for ease and security purposes. We’d include pieces like 4 Prong Round Diamond Stud Earrings and Two-Bezel Diamond Thin Band from the Deutsch Signature Collection in a capsule jewelry box.
Matching Metals
While we are certainly in the modern age of mixing metals and making our grandmothers faint, keeping like metals together can make for easy maintenance and outfit-building. Most jewelry requires upkeep based on the level of use, but all metalwork needs a good primp and polish every once in a while. Keeping like metals together will make sure that all of the silver gets serviced at the same time to protect against tarnishing, all the gold remains bright as ever, and all the platinum gets serviced all at the right time. On top of that, having jewelry sorted by metal can make accessorizing any outfit a breeze. No more searching through yellow gold to find that one platinum ring because every piece is in its place. We would organize the Blue Sapphire Top Bangle Bracelet by Hulchi Belluni in our white gold collection, while placing the Double Bead Stretch Bracelet by Hulchi Belluni with the yellow gold pieces (and only mix them to make grandma clutch her pearls.)
Color Coordinate
Turn that jewelry box into a rainbow. For the girls that love a color blocking combo and a bold look, make the jewelry organization match that energy. Rather than pairing like metals or even like gemstones, make it easier to build a colorful look by arranging pieces by hue. That means blue sapphires with blue topaz, emeralds with green tourmaline, and every color in between. Sorting by color can open up new jewelry combinations and possibilities that couldn’t be seen before if they were organized by designer or metal (or not organized at all.) While the Stella Necklace by Lauren K and the Pear Rhod Garnet Bezel Drop Earrings by Lauren K are from the same designer, the natural green hue of the boulder opal would be separated from the clean, opaque turquoise of the earrings for completely different looks.
